Sami Tolppi y su amigo Daniel Westerberg son dos amigos escandinavos que ya llevaban mucho tiempo colaborando en pequeños proyectos de moda y calzado. Un día, uno de los dos, o los dos, esto no lo tengo muy claro, se vieron con Pontus Alv- del que ya hablé largo y tendido en una entrada de este blog sobre Polar- y empezaron a charlar. Parece que este encuentro tuvo lugar en el bar preferido de Pontus, con vistas al mar, cuando vivía en Portugal.

Pontus siempre ha tenido sueños y da la impresión de que la vida le ha sonreído en este aspecto. Primero cumplió sus sueños de infancia, llegando a ser profesional y a vivir en EEUU todo el "american dream" del patín. Cuando fue madurando, abriendo los ojos a más realidades en torno a la industria del skate, empezó a soñar con cambiar la dirección que todo parecía tomar. Como os contaba en la otra entrada sobre Polar, empezó haciendo vídeos que retrataban una escena alejada del epicentro del patín y mostrando realidades alternativas que, gracias a su aportación, hoy en día ya no lo son tanto y se han convertido en referente del skateboarding mejor entendido. Con muchos sueños realizados, quizás solamente le quedaba uno por cumplir. Había revolucionado el mundo del material duro, había popularizado el DIY casero frente al DIY ambicioso de los que disponen de hormigonera todo el rato, había influido decisivamente en la moda, dando un volantazo estético definitivo hacia los primeros 90, había creado un estilo propio de edición de vídeos de skate, había marcado sin duda un antes y un después que encauzaría el rumbo para muchos imitadores a lo largo de lo que ya llevamos de siglo XXI. Pero, decíamos, le quedaba un sueño por cumplir. Ese sueño era entrar en el complejo y competitivo mundo de las zapatillas de skate y parece que esa conversación con vistas al océano en Porto acabó dando fruto y se gestó lo que viene siendo Last Resort AB.

Muchas marcas de zapatillas han ido cayendo tras la entrada de las grandes corporaciones. Otras, se mueven en un mar de irregularidades económicas y se alimentan, en gran parte, de pequeñas modas revivalísticas que de repente ensalzan modelos añejos, sin demasiado éxito más allá de eso. Por otro lado, las grandes marcas arrancaron unas políticas comerciales que de ninguna manera beneficiaban a las skateshops pequeñas, que son las que ayudaron a potenciarlas en un primer momento. Todo se volvía complicado, pues la calidad de las grandes marcas es innegable y, al final, son tus pies los que van dentro y es muy fácil aparcar la ética y la moral en pro de la comodidad, la durabilidad y la estética. Pero...¿Qué pasa si todo eso te lo da una marca pequeña? ¿Qué pasa si eso te lo da una marca de zapatillas de skate 100% fuera de ese universo corporativo?

Pasa que hablamos de LAST RESORT AB. Solo tienes que probarlas para darte cuenta de que te has puesto en los pies las mejores zapas de skate de la historia. Sami Tolppi and his friend Daniel Westerberg are two Scandinavian friends who have been collaborating on small fashion and footwear projects for a long time. One day, one of them, or both, I'm not entirely clear on this, met with Pontus Alv - whom I talked about extensively in a previous blog entry about Polar - and they started to chat. It seems that this meeting took place in Pontus' favorite bar with a view of the sea when he was living in Portugal.

Pontus has always had dreams, and it seems like life has smiled upon him in this regard. He first fulfilled his childhood dreams, becoming a professional skateboarder and living the "American dream" of skateboarding. As he matured and opened his eyes to more realities in the skateboarding industry, he began to dream of changing the direction that everything seemed to be taking. As I mentioned in the other entry about Polar, he started making videos that portrayed a skate scene far from the epicenter of skateboarding and showcased alternative realities that, thanks to his contributions, are no longer as alternative and have become a reference in a better-understood skateboarding. With many dreams realized, perhaps he had only one left to fulfill. He had revolutionized the world of hard goods, popularized DIY skate spots over ambitious DIY projects with concrete mixers always at hand, had a decisive influence on fashion, giving a definitive aesthetic shift to the early '90s, created his own style of skate video editing, and left an indelible mark that would chart the course for many imitators throughout the 21st century. But, as we were saying, he had one dream left to fulfill. That dream was to enter the complex and competitive world of skate shoes, and it seems that the conversation with a view of the ocean in Porto gave birth to what has become Last Resort AB.

Many skate shoe brands have fallen after the entry of large corporations. Others operate in a sea of economic irregularities and are largely fueled by small nostalgic trends that suddenly elevate old models, with limited success beyond that. On the other hand, the major brands initiated commercial policies that did not benefit small skate shops, which were instrumental in their initial growth. Everything became complicated because the quality of the major brands is undeniable, and in the end, it's your feet that go inside the shoes, and it's very easy to put ethics and morals aside in favor of comfort, durability, and aesthetics. But... what if all of that is provided by a small brand? What if a 100% skate shoe brand is outside that corporate universe?

That's where LAST RESORT AB comes in. You only have to try them on to realize that you've put on the best skate shoes in history. Everything about them is quality, beauty, durability, and a noble cause. I could spend hours talking about the excellent team they've assembled, very much in line with the underlying mentality of the entire project. Good taste. Nothing more to say.
